Do Yakuza get paid?
The yakuza mainly make their living through unlawful b usinesses, such as gambling, drugs, prostitution and loan-sharking. Most of the money comes from gambling, most often from dice games.
Approximately 5,200 yakuza gangs operating throughout Japan began to stake out their territories and violent gang wars occurred. These gangs controlled many businesses, engaged in sophisticated gambling and loan sharking activities, and invested heavily in sports and other entertainment.
These activities make the relationship between yakuza and police in Japan a complicated one; yakuza membership itself is not illegal, and yakuza-owned businesses and gang headquarters are often clearly marked. Gang whereabouts and activities are often known to Japanese police without the latter's taking any action.
This is a catastrophic demographic shift for a criminal organization, and it would be expected that in the face of this, the Yakuza would collapse, and that their criminal activities would cease. And yet, it is richer than it ever has been before.
There are crimes in Japan like all other countries, but Japan is different from America. For example, it's organized crime groups or gangs such as the Yakuza are unwilling to go out and attack or rob regular lawful civilians.
There are many cases of Yakuza members leaving in an attempt to live a normal life. One member claims he could not find permanent work when he tried to leave the criminal world, and when he managed to find work as a labourer he was mistreated so badly he eventually returned to a Yakuza organisation.
Reuters revealed that the Yakuza, the notorious criminal syndicates that control Japan's underworld, are filling a manpower void created by Japan's aging populations and a legacy of tight labor-market regulations. More specifically, they are filling the void with homeless men they've recruited off the streets.

They also work with local gangs, funneling Japanese tourists to gambling parlors and brothels. In California, the yakuza have made alliances with local Korean gangs as well as Chinese triads and Vietnamese gangs.
Foreigners do work for the Yakuza. In fact foreigners run some of the Yakuza groups. They are Koreans whose family migrated (by will or otherwise) to Japan in the early 20th century.

They are designed using an extremely painful process called irezumi, in which the tattoos are hand-poked.
Do yakuza carry guns?
The effect on organized crime is that Yakuza syndicates still employ Walther P38 and Tokarev pistols from the 20th century, mainly smuggled in from China, Russia and North Korea.

Do nothing and try to ignore them. Otherwise, behave as normally as possible. Yakuza culture is usually exclusive and they don't interact with common people, at least not directly. As long as you do not bring trouble to yourself, they will not confront you.
Recruitment is frequently through gambling or in recent years, motorcycle gangs. In the last few decades, yakuza have expanded into drugs and other more serious criminal activity. They have also moved into sophisticated activities.
Do police go after yakuza?
The implicit agreement between the Yakuza and the police is that as long as their world and the general public`s world don`t collide i.e. the Yakuza keep their own problems/turf wars/ etc. to themselves, the police will generally leave them alone. This is generally the way it is.
However, there's no apparent modern or historical basis for a white American being accepted into the yakuza, with the film's synopsis having little understanding of how the crime syndicates work.

Four largest syndicates
The Yamaguchi-gumi is the largest yakuza family, with about 8,200 members. The Sumiyoshi-kai is the second-largest yakuza family, with 4,200 members. Sumiyoshi-kai is a confederation of smaller yakuza groups. Its current head (会長 oyabun) is Isao Seki.
The black suit is a staple in a Yakuza's closet. Suits have an almost natural connection with masculinity; suits are made for expression and are instinctively perceived as authority, significance, and status.
