Maine has the lowest crime rate in America, with around 1.3 crimes per 1000 people. Like Vermont, the majority of crime is related to property theft, and there are very few instances of violent crimes such as mugging, assault, or murder.

St. Louis is the most unsafe city in the U.S. in 2023, according to personal finance website WalletHub.
WalletHub released a 2023 report listing the safest cities in the US. Cities were ranked based on 41 indicators of safety, including rates of crime and natural disasters. Nashua, New Hampshire, scored the highest, followed by Columbia, Maryland.
Compared to the rest of the country, Chicago does have a higher crime rate. It was 67 percent higher in 2020 — and violent crimes make up a large portion of that rate. From 2021 to 2022, overall crime in Chicago increased by a whopping 41 percent.
Massachusetts topped 2023's list, scoring 61 out of 100. New Jersey came in second. New Hampshire, New York, and Wyoming fill out the rest of the top five states to live in, in that order. Several Southern states – Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas, among others – rounded out the bottom of WalletHub's rankings.

The report's findings show that Nashua has the second-fewest assaults per capita and is among five U.S. cities that tied for having the lowest unemployment rate in America.
WalletHub released a 2023 study ranking the safest states in the US. Fifty-two safety indicators were considered in five categories, including road and financial safety. Louisiana was ranked at the bottom of the list, making it the least-safe state in the US.
