Walmart's common stock will begin trading on a post-split basis at the market open on Monday, Feb. 26, 2024, under the company's existing trading symbol โWMT.โ The stock split and final ratio were approved by Walmart's board.
That year Costco's stock also reached highs of around $600, and there arguably would have been more of a reason to do a split back then, when stock splits were attracting a lot of attention from investors. Costco's reluctance to split its shares back then suggests to me that it's not going to do one anytime soon.

Does it matter to buy before or after a stock split? If you buy a stock before it splits, you'll pay more per share than what it'll cost after it splits. If you're looking to buy into a stock at a cheaper price, you may want to wait until after the stock split.
Instead, I'm referring to Walmart's announcement roughly two weeks ago that it plans to conduct a 3-for-1 stock split on Feb. 26, 2024. CEO Doug McMillon explained that the company is splitting its stock because its founder, Sam Walton, felt that Walmart's share price should be affordable for its associates.

One side says a stock split is a good buying indicator, signaling that the company's share price is increasing and doing well. This may be true but a stock split simply has no effect on the fundamental value of the stock and poses no real advantage to investors.

Although Walmart's expanding e-commerce business and long-term prospects remain attractive there could be better buying opportunities even after its stock split as this does not always translate to shares of a company moving higher immediately afterward.

Fortunately, Costco currently has a Zacks Rank of #2 (Buy) thanks to rising earnings estimates. Since we recommend that investors select stocks carrying Zacks Rank of 1 (Strong Buy) or 2 (Buy) and Style Scores of A or B, it looks as if Costco fits the bill.
Microsoft hasn't indicated any plans for a stock split, but given its robust growth, this may be the year it joins its tech peers in splitting its high-priced shares.
